Hidradenitis Suppurativa

This year we are seeing a lot more actual patients.  It is really interesting, and when you see, touch, smell and talk to a person with a condition, it seems to be much more memorable.

I thought I would just take a few notes of when I see these patients, to help me remember, and to plot my development in understanding the massive field of medicine.

Some of the conditions I have seen this year include atopic dermatitis, bullous pemphigoid, Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia-1, Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris and mycosis fungoides.   You may or not be able to tell from that list that my clinical coach for this block is a dermatologist.  We have put much effort into elucidating the subtleties in the differential diagnosis for erythroderma.

This past week we saw a patient with Hidradenitis Suppurativa.  This is such a horrible disease of the skin in which it is so badly chronically inflamed by a form of acne that over time, scars, tracts and comedoes form such a disfiguration of the skin that it looks like someone had recovered from massive burns.  Often the skin remains ulcerated and open.  The chronic inflammation often precedes development of cancer.  This patient was 43 but it looked like he was in his 60s.  It is so severe it destroyed his life.

I won’t be able to forget that for quite some time.  Hopefully I never will.   If I do, I can maybe look back at this to remember.

  1. David. Hi. I was very interested in your web-blog re HS. It came to me in a google alert. I run the Support Group for suffererers of Hidradenitis.

It is a lot more common than you may think and I am sure you will up against it again. Personally I have had it for 16 years. Some have had it for 30 years and it knows no bounds. If you want to know more, please feel free to drop me a line.
Good luck with your studies and I know there are so many derm diseases but at least if you have seen HS you will be able to offer help sooner rather than later as is the norm.
    Many thanks

  2. Hi David I thought you might be interested in taking a
look at this website. I self diagnosed myself with HS a couple of months ago, did some research and discovered that there are some sufferers out there taking tumeric. I tried taking the capsule form and so far so good.

  3. Forgot to say good luck with your studies x

  4. Hi David. Great little article, I like anything that draws more attention to HS. I was diagnosed with Hidradenitis last year when I was pregnant with my first child and to be honest with you I totally freaked out to say the least!

Now though after months of searching the net for help and talking to a lot of other sufferers I’m in a much better place. In fact I found loads of great websites, the best one was probably http://curehidradenitissuppurativanow.com as it taught me so much especially about natural treatments like tea tree oil and turmeric which have reduced my outbreaks so much I feel like i don’t have the condition anymore.

Hope this helps and keep studying!
